Holy smokes.

Are you suggesting the whole place should be devoured in flaming torment by the vengeful wrath of God? Or literally you see smoke, albeit full of holes instead of a cartoon?

Thanks, Area. His cartoons are are right up there with Larson's. More people need to read them!

There is something very unique about a Silence of the Lamps cartoon. I started cartooning on Comic Fury at the start of 2016 and I feel very fortunate to have (just about) caught the last 6 months of Zaptoid's work. In my opinion those last few months were his best work, it was so unfortunate that they were also his last.

I've tried replicating his style and humour (sorry about the spelling, I'm english) and it's very difficult to do. There is (as you say) something of a Larson about his work, with Zap's ability to put you in the moment and tell a story with just one picture and a salient bit of dialogue.

Somehow he takes a mix of sarcasm, grumpy old man and razor sharp wit in perfect proportions and illustrates it with a slightly grotesque and unusual style. You're never going to fall in love with any of those characters, but boy do they perfectly match the sentiment!

Sadly not as popular as it deserves to be, and I think that really helped bring about its demise. I would also love to see the return of the great master, but sadly I don't think it will ever happen.

It's an amazing tribute, and thank you for including one of my green aliens.

No need to apologize, I'm Canadian....heck, I feel like I should be apologizing to you!

Great analysis. That's makes them sound even better than Larson's

The Great Master indeed. Well even Masters retire.

I got really into Larson earlier this year. I did a fair bit of research and trawled through a lot of his catalogue. He's retired now too and also when he first started he also found that many people just didn't get his humour.

I think that Remulak realised that this platform just didn't have the right audience for him.

I've just looked up the Rutles - might have to track that movie down!

1st Jun 2021, 9:15 PM edit delete reply

Ha! I thought for sure you'd have got the Rutles reference.

A website full of anime, porn, furries and children isn't the right platform for his cartoons? Surely you jest.

I guessed (not difficult really) that it was some sort of parody, but I'd not heard of the Rutles. It hasn't been re-shown in the UK (as far as I know) and I'm not old enough to have been into it when it was originally aired. In fact Remulak's reference to Zager and Evans is a significant point in time for me, suggesting my nipperhood status in the mid-seventies!

It was a good switch, I'd have been proud of that one! (and well spotted McGrenivan, you switched the posters!!)

Yes, I loved "Silence..." too, and there IS a touch of that to Area 5.1 too.

This is amazing, and a profound moment of reverence for good ol’ Zappazulak!

1st Jun 2021, 7:23 PM edit delete reply

Ha ha, thanks McGrenivan....Zappazulak will be his next alias.

...also a Rutle fan from way back, and for a while there I liked Piggy In the Middle better than I Am the Walrus. Not so much anymore, but still like Get Up & Go more than Get Back.
You’re also tearing the very fabric of parody by putting 2 DIFFERENT Rutles posters in the same place where there use to be a Quarrymen poster.

Absolutely. Pretty much everything Eric Idle has contributed to has been golden.

My only defense is that The Riff Raff Cafe is a magical place. May it rein for years to come.

Whoa!! I'd say that this cartoon has put a tear in my beer but I think that may be the name of a copyrighted country music song.~~ I'm honored Francis! Am I depicted working on my final toon? If everything goes well I'll finish it in the year 2525..if man is still alive...or so say Zager and Evans. ~~ :)

1st Jun 2021, 8:29 PM edit delete reply

It might have been "Pour a Beer in my Ear" or was that "Poor me it's Been A Tough Year" those country songs all sound the same to me anyways.

I glad that you're honored, but you'll probably feel differently after Thursday's cartoon.

Actually, I do believe there IS still one more of your cartoons in the pipeline, but it's only a rumour at this point.

LOL - I can see it now, sitting on an easel in a locked room waiting to be completed. Nobody is allowed to enter that room and remove the velvet drape that covers the canvas.

Or am I just thinking of "The Picture of Dorian Gray"?

Hmm. ...perhaps....the mystery deepens. Dum dee Dum dee Dum dee dum

Would it be too obvious to answer the question with "Great Cartooning"?

Hope to see more of the Silence of the Lamps in the future!

4th Jun 2021, 8:46 PM edit delete reply

Me too. I think we should start lobbying Remulak until he agrees!
